Life's Little Luxuries

You all are going to get tired of me saying be thankful for what you have, but really, you should.

Yesterday we received some of our packages from Amazon. It was like Christmas!  We ordered some things we didn't want to buy here cuz it can be pretty expensive for things that are imported. This is where the Apple Jacks came from.

Here cereal can run anywhere from $6-$8, depending on what kind and where you go. Almost all cold items have been previously frozen, like shredded cheese, American butter, cream cheese, etc.  Most of them expired last year but they were frozen most of the time I guess. So far it all tastes normal. We don't buy cream cheese though cuz it's $7-$8 for an 8 oz.

They use milk for everything here, hence the sacredness of the cow. Well, that's part of it anyway.  Although fresh milk is readily available, it is not pasteurized. It doesn't come in gallons like back home.  At some dairy stands it comes in bags.  You have to boil this milk if you want to drink it. We buy milk that has been high temp treated (basically pasteurized) and packaged in boxes that allow for a shelf life of 120 days from packing. It is made by Nestle. Sophia likes it, Tyson doesn't, I don't like milk either way.

We are patiently waiting for our shipment to arrive. It won't be here until the end of next month. It can get expensive buying things we like from back home.

More to come.........

Weekend

We had a great weekend.
Friday I had an interview for a position in the HR department.  It is not nursing related which will be a nice change.  I think the interview went well and I should hear either way early this week.

Saturday we had our friends Stewart and Kari over for dinner.  I wanted to make something familiar from home.  I knew everyone would appreciate a tex mex meal.  I made shredded chicken, spanish rice, black beans, home made tortillas, fresh salsa, and cucumber lemonade.  Everything was delicious and our bellies were happy.  We especially enjoyed the cucumber lemonade, well except for Tyson.  We visited for a while after dinner and lost track of time.  We really enjoyed ourselves.  It definitely makes a difference having friends here.

This morning we were invited to their house so Sophia could play at the park.  It's about a ten minute walk to their apartment.  The park is right across the street from their building.  It is a pretty decent park, probably the only decent park in this area.  There was a man with his granddaughter there.  He was very nice and did talk with us for a while.  Sophia had a blast and everyone else enjoyed watching her play.  Stewart and Kari are expecting a baby soon and you could tell they were thinking about watching their own child play in the future.  They don't know the gender of the baby and are waiting until birth, so it is pretty exciting.

So far we are adjusting well.  We do like our housekeeper and Sophia has done well staying with her twice so far.  Our guards are pretty nice and watch out for us.  We are enjoying what little of the city we have seen so far and are looking forward to the cooler months to explore a lot more.  There is so much to see in this country, even just here in Delhi.  We haven't even begun to touch what is out there.  More to come.....
